I think one quick look at the Meloca Designs online shop conveys how much I love colour, especially when it comes to my favourite craft hobby, cross stitch.
If you’ve not come across it before, cross stitch is a type of embroidery that is made up of stitched crosses of different colours to form a beautiful image or pattern. It’s a relatively easy form of embroidery, making cross stitch great for both beginners and experts alike, depending on the design.
Whether you’ve got a colourful home already or want to inject some colour into your home, these vibrant cross stitch kits and patterns are the perfect projects.
1. Ruby the Giant Squid Cross Stitch Kit by Emily Peacock, £185
This big and bold cross stitch kit uses Anchor tapestry wool rather than embroidery thread, and is inspired by packaging of the Far East.
The cross stitch kit comes with all the tapestry wool you need, an easy-to-follow colour chart, and a 100% cotton Interlocked Zweigart canvas. The finished piece is approximately 90 cm x 55 cm (35" x 22").
If Ruby the squid isn’t quite your vibe, Emily also has a whole Sea Creatures collection, featuring anglerfish, eels, jellyfish and more, all in her signature style.
2. Mandala Highland Cow Cross Stitch Kit from Meloca Designs, from £31.95
I love designing the colourful Meloca Designs cross stitch kits, and our adorable highland cow is no exception - he’s so cute with his horns and fringe.
Our fun mandala patterned cow is so vibrant and joyful, it would brighten up any room in the house, especially if the finished article was framed in a colourful 7” embroidery hoop, like these from Stitch Kit Crafts.
In the cross stitch kit you get instructions, colour chart and key, DMC embroidery thread, thread holder, aida fabric, and a needle, and there’s an option to add on an embroidery hoop for £4, if you don’t already have one.
3. The Animal House Cross Stitch Pattern by Satsuma Street, £15.10
Photo by Jody Rice from Satsuma Street
This jolly, brightly-coloured cross stitch pattern is designed by Jody Rice for her craft business Satsuma Street - so-called because that’s the name of the road she used to live on, over in the USA.
It’s such a fun and vibrant scene, with all sorts of wild creatures living in one fantastical house. It would be really great for a kid’s bedroom, playroom or nursery!
The Animal House is a downloadable cross stitch pattern, so you’ll need to have or source the 23 bold embroidery thread colours, as well as aida fabric.
4. Hello Spring Cross Stitch Kit from The Geeky Stitching Co, £18.99
This lovely and bright Geeky Stitching Co cross stitch kit reads “hello spring” and has cute images of carrots, hearts, flowers, and a chick, all in perfectly springy colours that remind me of Easter eggs.
In the kit you get everything you need to complete this cross stitch design, including pre-cut DMC threads, a wooden embroidery hoop, Zweigart fabric, cross stitching needle, and a full colour-printed pattern.
5. Rainbow Repeat Cross Stitch Kit from Pulp Stitchin’, £18
Wow! This super fun and vibrant repeat pattern of rainbows would be a really colourful addition to any home.
In this cross stitch kit from Aberdeen-based Pulp Stitchin’, you get everything you need to create this cross stitch design, including aida fabric, threads, needle, an embroidery hoop, backing felt, pattern, and instructions.
If you’re an experienced cross stitcher, I’ll bet you could keep repeating this pattern to make a mega rainbow cross stitch, which you could then make into a cushion to brighten up your living room.
6. Happy Teacups Sampler Pattern by Stitchrovia, £5.82
What a cute and colourful cross stitch pattern of stacked retro patterned cups design with a yellow teapot pouring tea. This downloadable PDF cross stitch pattern is by Emma Congdon, who is definitely one of my favourite cross stitch designers out there.
Included in the pattern is a colour chart with a legend for DMC and Anchor floss as well as fabric recommendations, so you will need to have or source your own fabric, threads, embroidery hoop, etc.
7. Floral A-Z Cross Stitch Kit from Sew Sophie Crafts, £14.95
